Today is Chinese New Year Day, the beginning of the Year of the Tiger. Last night after we arrived at the Twin Pitons, we started making traditional spring festival paper couplets. These are red paper decorations with auspicious writings that you put on the front door. The color red ed symbolises good wishes and luck. Our two paired couplets wrote 出入平安, 身體健康 which means ‘travel safely and good health’. The girls also made 紅包 hongbao, aka red pockets. Parents would give out red pockets filled with money on the morning of Chinese New Year, symbolizing good wishes and luck in the new year. This is like giving christmas presents in chinese culture. We also had video call with popo, gunggung, Auntie Elkie and Queenie who're stuck at home in Hong Kong, as Hong Kong is experiencing the fifth Covid wave and the city is in semi lockdown. Sad that we can't spend CNY together this year.
