Longlines are a terrible thing. Miles of very strong rope with many lines and hooks on. The huge huge hooks and massive great squid on each hook to catch hundreds of fish per line. They are also pretty dangerous for cruisers.
We had seen a bunch of buoys and thankfully avoid entangling ourselves is these never ending longlines off the coast of Columbia. At one point we travelled almost 3miles to go around one such line. Sadly we didn’t see another a few hours later and caught it with our port rudder. Unfortunately it didn’t slide off and instead cut into the rudder causing a deep gash. I dived in to patch with some underwater epoxy. Hopefully should hold out till we get to Galapagos.
We should have pull in their lines because our own fishing has been dismal. Only one Mahi Mahi since we left.
